INTRO TO LINOCUT RELIEF PRINT WORKSHOP

TBA March 2025 (2 Days - Saturday / Sunday)

Have you always wanted to try printmaking, but just didn’t know where to start? Or did you take that class in High School/College and always want to try it again? This is your class!

This workshop offers a systematic approach to the fundamentals of single-color printmaking using linoleum blocks (aka linocut). The focus will be on proper carving technique, inking for single-layer prints while experimenting with various paper types, and printing using multiple methods. My goal is to leave participants with the basic (or rebooted) skills to be able to start (or rejuvenate) a home practice with very little investment in special equipment.

This 2-day, fast-paced workshop will be held at my home studio in Oakhurst, California near Yosemite National Park in the Central Sierra.

What you can expect to cover in this workshop:

  • Translate your Favorite Sketches or Photographs into Successful Designs for Carving and Printing

  • Learn Proper Mark Making and Carving Techniques

  • Use Artist-grade Archival Quality Linoleum, Ink and Paper

  • Learn a Variety of Printing Methods from using Wooden Spoons to my Blick 999 II Etching Press

All materials and carving (Flexcut and Pfeil) and printing tools are provided during the workshop. You need only bring lunch, snacks, water bottle, enthusiasm, an apron or old clothes (INK!) - and your own creativity!

Limited to 4 participants.

Monique Wales is an internationally award-winning artist and printmaker. She has studied in Japan, Spain and the United States. Her own detailed and evocative work derives inspiration from nature in all its forms, while stretching the limits of what is possible from reduction-method relief printing.

MULTI-LAYER RELIEF PRINTMAKING - FOCUS ON COLOR

TBD Late Fall 2024 in Oakhurst, California, USA

Ready to print in color? This 3-day class will explore the multiple-block and reduction-methods of relief printmaking to bring depth and color to your work.

We will touch on design, carving, inking and printing techniques, but the main focus of the workshop will be on using multi-plate and/or reduction-method approaches to add color and depth to your printmaking. (If you are completely new to relief printing, you may want to start with the Intro to Relief Printmaking Workshop.) We will explore three different techniques to achieve consistent registration of block to paper - a necessity for producing crisp, clean detail in print.

This 3-day workshop will be heldat my home studio in Oakhurst, California near Yosemite National Park in the Central Sierra.

What we expect to cover in this workshop:

  • Designing for Color / Depth

  • Refine your Mark-Making and Carving Skills

  • Create Duplicate Blocks for Color Using a Key Block

  • Reduction-Method Printing

  • Explore 3 Different Registration Types

  • Make your Own Registration Jig

  • Blended Rolls / Using Transparency in Ink

  • Inking & Printing Tricks & Tips

  • Using Artist-Grade, Archival Quality Linoleum, Ink and Paper

  • Use of my Laguna Etching Press ‘Alice"‘

You will develop a single idea into print using multiple blocks and/or reductive printmaking. You may choose to focus solely on Reduction-Method Printing or Multi-block Printing or Multi-block with Reduction Printing (highly recommended)! The goal is to challenge your mark-making ability, develop your use of color and understanding of how layering ink works, and learn techniques to make a perfect registration jig. I will be providing precut 6” x 4” blocks to start (you will cut your own color blocks as part of the class) unless otherwise requested - I can provide custom block sizes of up to 30 square inches upon request with adequate warning (up to 1 week before class begins.)

All Materials and Carving Tools (Flexcut and Pfeil) are provided. You need only bring lunch, snacks, water bottle, enthusiasm, an apron or old clothes (INK!) - and your own creativity! Limited to 4 participants.
